INTRO TO OIL PAINTING

Whether you are a beginning or seasoned painter, Elizabeth will work with you to meet your individual goals and deepening your understanding of oil painting.

  • class description

    Working with a simplified palette of 6 pigments, beginning students will learn the basics of color mixing, laying a foundation, and developing an image on canvas. More experienced painters will be invited to explore transparent pigments for creating luminosity through the use of  glazing, and other advanced techniques. Each class will begin with a short demonstration before group discussions and one on one instruction. Students may work from a simple still life provided, or photo reference. This supportive class setting is designed to help each student create a painting practice to work with confidence throughout the year. 


    Basic paint kits are available for a fee. Mixing mediums, and clean up supplies are provided by NISDA.. Students will bring a palette box, palette paper, brushes, and canvas. See supply list for details.

FALL IN LOVE WITH WATERCOLOR

Explore Portraiture, Plein Air, and Contemporary Expressionistic methods. Students will learn basic techniques.

    Considering the ancient Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi, students will learn how releasing paint’s unruly components creates something that surprises and delights us!  


    Basic materials provided with additional supplemental materials suggested by the instructor.

    IArtists of all levels and styles of painting are welcome in this class, whether you are a curious novice looking to begin painting, a “sometimes” painter with a painting that you’d like to finish, or a professional painter needing time and space to work.

CLAY HANDBUILDING

Handbuilding is the art of using our hands and tools to create ceramic pieces instead of using a wheel. The sculpting of cups, bowls, containers, and choice objects will be demonstrated and are the basic options to create in this course.

    Guidance and support will be provided to make, and have fun. Each student purchases clay from NISDA (25 lb box). The fee includes the cost of firing.  Primary ceramic techniques such as coiling, slab, and pinch pot construction, along with ceramic vocabulary will be taught and explored to create effective artworks.  


    Slip: watery clay mixture used as “glue” and texture  


    Score: the act of creating a rough edge/texture to connect, close, or add clay with slip  


    Wedge: the act of preparing clay to reduce air bubbles and soften  


    Slab: flatten or spread clay from a lump to an equal & even squared slice  


    Coil: the fundamental act of rolling clay to use to build/create


HANDMADE CHESS SET
WORKSHOP

Saturday, October 5
9 am–2 pm


Students will create a 9"x 9" square "board" with 8x8 1" squares and half an inch as a border on either side. This will be done by slab rolling the clay and cutting it to size.

  • class description

    A stencil is available to aid in the speed of this process. The chess pieces include sixteen pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. With the total 32 pieces, casted options such as:  mushrooms, fruits, and sea creatures including oyster shell, starfish, crab claw, scallop shell, sand dollar, and barnacle. During this one day workshop participants will roll out the board, sculpt the pieces, and glaze the set. Each student is provided with 15 lbs of clay; cone 5 white.  Sets will be fired and students can pick them up after the firing. 


    Please bring a Bag Lunch/Snack.

    Thursday evening we will meet at NISDA campus then depart for a location determined by weather and instructor.


    An overview of basic photographic principles and mechanics will be discussed. Time will be maximized for photographing with a focus on methods and challenges to create photographs that are both unique to the location and photographer.  A meaningful way to remember our Island sea and landscapes!


    This Nantucket Landscape based workshop is open to all age groups (ages 9+ accompanied by an adult, teens and adults) and skill levels ; from absolute beginner to seasoned pro, or a family on vacation! All camera formats and/or devices welcomed, and tripod encouraged but not required.

    • Meet up at the NISDA campus in Wauwinet at 5:50 pm. 
    • Travel together in NISDA’s school van, departing anytime after 6:00 pm.  
    • Participants need the ability to walk for moderate stretches of time on-site. 
    
    • Dress for the weather and BYO water.

    Fees:   

    Full payment due in advance. 

    Members buy and use NISDA clay.  Cone 06-05 terracotta  or Cone 5 white body.  A 25 lb. bag Is $50.00, includes firing.


    Members need to have prior experience and will work independently. 

    Instruction is not included in the membership fee. (Tutorials/courses are  available.)

    • 2 Week minimum: $250
    • 1 Month: $450
    • 2 Month: $800

    Community Members may use the studio during Open Studio hours only.

Extra Studio Time for Registered Students


Registered students are welcome to have access to, and use of studio space outside of scheduled class times to further their work. This access is included in the tuition for the duration of the course.

A schedule of “open studio” times for each space is available. Under some conditions, use of a studio during a scheduled class might be arranged, with the consent of the faculty member.
